Fundraising

Is there a fundraising target?

add remove

We suggest aiming for £100, and if you reach it, we’ll send you one of our new Step Up medals as a thank you!

What your fundraising could do:

  • £20 could fund a bereavement counselling session for a patient’s loved one.
  • £35 could provide a home visit from a community nurse.
  • £50 could fund art and music therapy sessions in our Wellbeing Centre.

Please note: You’ll need to raise £100 or more to earn your Step Up medal.

Can we fundraise as a team?

add remove

You and your friends, family or colleagues are more than welcome to take part as a team. You will be given the option to create or join a pre-existing team when registering.

You’ll each receive a t-shirt and have your own fundraising page to track your individual progress, while contributing to a shared team total and supporting each other along the way.

To receive your Step Up medal, the £100 fundraising target applies per person. If you’re part of a team, you’ll need to raise £100 each, so a team of 3 would need to raise £300 in total. This can be contributed by one person or shared across the team, and all members will still receive a medal.

Getting started

When and where can I complete my miles?

add remove

This is a virtual challenge, and so you can complete your miles anywhere that works for you during  June  - around your neighbourhood, in a local park, or even on a treadmill at the gym.

You could do this as 1 mile a day or 30 miles in one go, or something in between. How you break it up is completely up to you.

On launch day, you can easily connect your page to Strava or your preferred tracking app to keep a record of your walks or runs, earn your badges and update your supporters on your progress.

How do I track my miles?

add remove

We recommend using a free app like Strava, which can log your miles using GPS.

It’s easy to connect your Strava to your Funraisin page on launch day so that you can log your miles and keep friends and family updated.

You can also join our Strava Club or Facebook group to connect with fellow participants.

Registration

Is there a registration fee?

add remove

No - taking part in the Step Up for St John’s challenge is completely free.

Can my child participate?

add remove

Yes - children are welcome to take part; however, for safety reasons, anyone under 18 must be signed up and supervised by a parent or guardian.

You will have the option to add a child upon registration. Their page will be linked to yours, meaning you will have full oversight of tracking their miles and overseeing any fundraising activity.

General

Why 30 miles?

add remove

Our care reaches across the communities we serve, including Camden, Westminster, Brent, Kensington & Chelsea, Hammersmith & Fulham, Islington and Harrow.

If you were to walk across the areas we support, it would total around 30 miles. This challenge represents that journey, connecting every step you take with the people and families we care for every day.

As you work your way through the challenge, you'll pass through the virtual boroughs, earning badges and learning more about the work we do there.

Can I do more or less than 30 miles?

add remove

Absolutely! This challenge is yours to shape. People of all fitness levels are taking on this challenge. What matters most is that you’re doing something that truly challenges you. That will look different for everyone, so feel free to tailor the challenge to your own abilities. It should be tough but still doable. You can adjust your goal and update your fundraising page accordingly.

What safety precautions should I take?

add remove

Your safety comes first. Plan your walks carefully, consider your own fitness level, and take breaks when needed. If walking alone, let someone know your route and carry a fully charged phone. Stay aware of your surroundings and make sure to stay hydrated.

St John’s Hospice are not responsible for any outcomes resulting from participation
, and all participants do so at their own risk.

What if I don’t complete the challenge?

add remove

The most important thing is challenging yourself and raising funds to support St John’s Hospice throughout June. Do as much as you can, keep your supporters updated, and enjoy being part of the challenge. Every step counts.

If you manage to raise £100 or more but don’t complete your miles, you will still earn your Step Up medal.
